TITLE:  Health Associate (Substitute)

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Possess high school diploma or equivalent (a copy will need to be provided) and minimum AA Degree or 60 credit hours preferred.
  2. Maintain current First Aid and CPR training.
  3. Possess or ability to obtain a fingerprint clearance card.
  4. Possess knowledge of the purpose of the school health program and procedures within the State of Arizona.
  5. Demonstrate understanding, patience and tactfulness with students, parents, teachers, and administrators.
  6. Possess knowledge of community health and social problem resources.
  7. Maintain accurate, current records.
  8. Manage the health office.
  9. Work with students, staff, and assist in providing health education.
  10. Ability to use standard office and health services equipment.
  11. Relate to students, parents, teachers, administrators, staff, and public in a positive manner through understanding, patience, and tactfulness.
  12. Work collaboratively with School Nurses and other Health Associates to make sound judgments and decisions in a wide variety of situations under the pressure of a school-based health services office.

 

JOB GOAL:

In the absence of the school Health Associate, create a climate of health and well being in the school health office. Serve as a resource for teachers, staff, students and families as well as the Health Associate in school-based healthcare matters.  Work and plan with administrators, school personnel, parents, students, medical professionals, civic groups, and community agencies to improve the health of school-aged children and to minimize health problems that may interfere with effective learning.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsibilities shall include, but not be limited to, collaboration / cooperation / communication with the partner School Nurse to perform the following functions in a school-based health services office:

  1. Assume the responsibility for appropriate intervention, management, and referral for school-aged student healthcare matters.
  2. Dispense medications to students as needed.
  3. Identify and report suspected child abuse and neglect per applicable laws and school district policies to school principal and authorities as the mandate reporter.
  4. Collaborate, communicate and cooperate positively and successfully with School Nurses and other Health Associates to maximize health services for school-aged students in the schools shared in partnership.
  5. Participate in orientation and outgoing training in school-based health protocols with School Nurses and other Health Associates in school settings.
  6. Requisition and maintain medical supplies within the school.
  7. Initiate, maintain and update accurate school health records.
  8. Collaborate with Administrative Assistant for Administrative Services in processing workplace compensation claims and documents staff / adult injuries within the school setting.
  9. Aid school-aged students in management of school healthcare matters.
  10. Cooperate with local health department on school-based healthcare matters and concerns.
  11. Provide information to teaching staff that relates general sound health to effective learning in educational settings.
  12. Support the maintenance of school health programs, such as: vision / hearing screening and immunization programs.
  13. Contribute to general health education program of school and community.
  14. Assume responsibility in caring for the sick and injured in the school in accordance with school policy.
  15. Cooperate with families and physician in the general health program for children.
  16. Interact with students, staff, and public in a positive manner.
  17. Understand and apply safety precautions as outlined in SDS (safety data sheets).
  18. Operate equipment safely.
  19. Meet collaboratively and in a positive manner with School Nurse and Director of Special Education on a regular basis.
  20. Contribute to the team by accomplishing additional duties as assigned.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and interpret documents in English as well as the ability to write routine correspondence in English. Ability to speak effectively in English before groups of customer or employees.

 

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of situations / issues. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written and verbal form.

 

EVALUATION:

Performance will be evaluated by each Principal in conjunction with the Director of Special Education.

 

SUPERVISION:

Supervised by the Principal with input from the Director of Special Education.  Acts as a student supervisor in the health center.
